Toy Box

By the time my son was about six years old, he had accumulated quite the ‘arsenal’ of toys. In fact, his room was quite over run with them… under his bed, in his dresser, stuff in the closet; not to mention the overflowing toy box. He was certainly a very blessed boy, with very generous grandparents. But inevitably, the day came when we had to talk to him about thinning out his ‘pirate’s booty’ and letting some of his ‘not played with in a while’ toys go. It was a bit of a battle as you can imagine. I get it though. To him, all his toys were valuable. He viewed giving up some of his toys as ‘losing’ what was his. However, as his parents, we knew Christmas was coming and he was again going to most likely ‘strike gold’ under the tree. But his young mind couldn’t quite comprehend the thought of letting go in order to make room for what was coming. All he could see was the now; us asking him to let some of his precious belongings go.

As adults, over the course of our own lives and spiritual journey, we can have the same mindset as my son. We are very good at collecting things that fill our time, max out our resources and push us to the limits of our mental/emotional capacities. And like my son’s room, our individual lives unquestionably have limited space. That is why there will come a time when our Heavenly Father will ask us to personally ‘lighten our load’, adjust our priorities and make room for what He has in-store for us. Also like my son, we can struggle, putting up a fight to keep what we feel is ours to have or even what we feel is our ‘right’ to keep.

This is an opportunity for us to trust God that He is for us and not against us. Trust that If He’s asking us to let go of something ‘good’, it’s because He has something even more amazing on the way. He’s asking us to make some room in our own ‘toy box’ so we’ll have the space to hold the gift He’s just waiting to give.

‘Jesus continued to say to all of them, “Any of you who want to be my follower must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you every day for following me.’ –  Luke 9:23 (ERV)
