Perspective: Franchise Player

Franchise PlayerIf you know some about the National Football League, there’s this unique player designation that a team’s management can place upon a special player to keep them from going to another team. Generally speaking, a ‘Franchise Player’ is an athlete who is not simply just the best player on their team, but a player that the ‘franchise’ can build their team around for the foreseeable future. Once a player has been given a franchise ‘tag’, they are bound to that team.

This makes me think of my marriage. I know this may sound a bit out of the ordinary, but what if I looked at my wife as my ‘Franchise Spouse’? If I place her into the above definition, it makes her ‘franchise tag’ much more impacting:

Debra is ‘a wife who is not simply just the best wife…, but a wife that our ‘relationship’ can build our marriage around for the… future.

When we step back and consider that our spouses are just as important to us and our marriage (if not more so) than a designated ‘franchise player’ is to their team, we can gain a fresh appreciation for their importance to the health, success and longevity of our relationship. It also communicates volumes of our commitment to our spouse… like, ‘Hey babe, you’re definitely a keeper… wouldn’t trade you for anything!’

The man who finds a wife finds a good thing; she is a blessing to him from the Lord.’ – Prov 18:22
