Mobile Manna                           applying God’s Word to our everyday lives                                                                                                                               May 24, 2011

** Note – this is an outline for a 30 minute (lunch time) bible study we started at my work

Question: Is the Bible really God’s Word?

Our answer will determine our entire perspective on life:

In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God. John 1:1

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 2 Timothy 3:16

No prophecy ever originated from humans it was given by the Holy Spirit as humans spoke under God’s direction. 2 Peter 1:21

Question: How do we know?

Internal Evidences: Testify to its divine origin

Unity – 66 individual books – written on three continents – three different languages – over 1500 years by 40 authors – all walks of life – the Bible is one unified book beginning to end w/o contradiction

Prophecies – hundreds of very detailed prophecies in the bible (unlike Nostradamus-like prophecies and predictions, other religious books, etc., which are usually general in nature). The main prophetic theme through out the Bible is concerning Jesus Christ as the Messiah – over 300 prophecies. Foretold Jesus’ birthplace, lineage, how he would die and that Jesus would rise again. There simply is no logical way to explain the fulfilled prophecies in the Bible other than by divine origin.

Unique Power & Authority – the Bible’s ability to transform lives is unlike any other book ever written. This authority and power are best seen in the way countless lives have been transformed by the supernatural power of God’s Word. Drug addicts have been cured by it, troubled souls find hope and peace by it, hardened criminals and sinners alike find forgiveness and are reformed by it, and hate is turned into love by it.

The Bible does possess a dynamic and transforming power that is only possible because it is truly God’s Word.

External Evidences:  Withstanding the attacks

Historical significance – details historical events and its truthfulness and accuracy can and has been verified.

Writer’s Integrity – God used men from many walks of life to record His words.  These men were honest, sincere and willing to die for what they believed  – testifying that God had truly spoken to them.

Indestructibility of the Bible – because of its importance and its claim to be the very Word of God, the Bible has suffered more vicious attacks and attempts to destroy it than any other book in history.

From early Roman Emperors through communist dictators and on to modern-day atheists and agnostics, the Bible has withstood and outlasted all of its attackers and is still today the most widely published book in the world. Throughout time, skeptics have regarded the Bible as mythological, but archeology has confirmed it as historical. Opponents have attacked its teaching as primitive and outdated, but its moral and legal concepts and teachings have had a positive influence on societies and cultures throughout the world. It continues to be attacked by pseudo-science, psychology, and political movements, yet it remains just as true and relevant today as it was when it was first written. It is a book that has transformed countless lives and cultures throughout the last 2000 years. No matter how its opponents try to attack, destroy, or discredit it, the Bible remains; its veracity and impact on lives is unmistakable. The accuracy which has been preserved despite every attempt to corrupt, attack, or destroy it is clear testimony to the fact that the Bible is truly God’s Word and is supernaturally protected by Him. It should not surprise us that, no matter how the Bible is attacked, it always comes out unchanged and unscathed. After all, Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Mark 13:31). After looking at the evidence, one can say without a doubt that, yes, the Bible is truly God’s Word.

Question: If we choose to believe the Bible as truly God’s Word, what does that mean for us?

–       we should cherish it, study it, obey it, and fully trust it.

–       to dismiss it is to dismiss God Himself.

–       believe it has always contained everything we need to know about God in order to have a right relationship with Him

–       it is the final authority for all matters of faith, religious practice, and morals – life in general.

–       understand that knowledge without application is useless. The Bible will change our lives only when we apply it to our lives

Summary

A purchased piece of electronic equipment comes with operating instructions, safety rules, etc. If we read them and follow them, not only will we understand the full capacity, capabilities and purposes of our purchase, but we will also know how to operate it safely and get the most use out of it. As God’s creation, we also come with an ‘instruction manual’ – the Bible. If we read it, learn it and apply it to our lives, we will learn our full purpose, capacity and capabilities and how to ‘operate’ us safely – for our entire lives!

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us. The Scriptures give us patience and encouragement so that we can have hope. Romans 15:4
