If you are a dog owner, you know what I am talking about when it comes to begging dogs… dogs ‘circling’ the dinner table waiting for scraps to fall, pacing in the kitchen hoping for a nibble of something yummy, etc. Dogs just seem to have a natural ‘nack’ for begging.  The funny thing is… you and I both know that if our dog is persistent enough, most of the time they’ll get their treat – right!? One of my favorite bible adventures is one such ‘begging’ story…

Matthew 15:21-28

Jesus left that place and went to the area of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that area came to Jesus and cried out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter has a demon, and she is suffering very much.” But Jesus did not answer the woman. So his followers came to Jesus and begged him, “Tell the woman to go away. She is following us and shouting.” Jesus answered, “God sent me only to the lost sheep, the people of Israel.”  Then the woman came to Jesus again and bowed before him and said, “Lord, help me!”  Jesus answered, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and give it to the dogs.”  The woman said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you have great faith! I will do what you asked.” And at that moment the woman’s daughter was healed.

This story is absolutely incredible!  Jesus first ignores her then compares her to a dog – but she is not put off – she still doesn’t give up.  She was persistent and desperate to the point of even being willing to take Jesus’ ‘crumbs’.  Jesus acknowledged these traits in her and called them  ‘great faith’ and then healed her daughter. So, how desperate and persistent am I for the things of God?  When I pray… and don’t get an answer, do I give up or do I continue to press in?  Sometimes I wonder if one of the reasons why God doesn’t answer my prayers “right away” is that He is waiting to see how desperate and persistent I am… how bad do I want it?  Notice, it was only after the woman displayed her ‘great faith’ before Jesus, did He heal her daughter.

Lord, I will take just your ‘crumbs’ for they alone are enough for me!

You must persevere, so when you have done the will of God you will receive what He has promised. Hebrews 10:36
