The bible is the most published book in history.  More copies of the bible have been printed worldwide than any other book ever written. Yet it also remains arguably the most controversial book ever written.   People have been killed over its contents and entire counties have gone to war because of disagreements based upon the words written on the pages of this mysterious book. The bible begins and ends in love.  It contains every element of a “good book”, regardless of why style of books you like to read – drama, suspense, romance, mystery, action, adventure, battle, documentary, autobiography, biography, etc.  It’s all there contained in this “one book” – made up of 66 individual books written over a span of about 1600 years by 40 different writers.  Regardless of your viewpoint on the bible, it is quite a piece of artwork!

So, if the bible is the most popular book in all of history and contains every element of a great novel, why all the controversy?  What’s all the fuss over this “one” book? After all, it’s just a book, right?  You can take it or leave it.  Well it’s not that easy, cut and dry – black and white.  For you see, what has been written on the pages of the bible challenges every human being ever born and yet to be born.  Why?  For each of us, what we choose to do with the information written in this book will determine the outcome of our past, our present and our future… forever! Do you remember (or your kids may have them) those “choose your own adventure” books back from the 1980’s?   From chapter to chapter, you got to choose the direction, path and story outcome of the main characters in popular books such as the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. The “kicker” was – once you started reading the first chapter, you had to choose a path.  There was not an option to do nothing.  To continue the adventure, you had to choose one of three “paths” at the end of each chapter.  Your options might have been something like – The Klingon’s begin firing their weapons upon the Starship Enterprise.  If you (Captain Kirk) respond to the attack by going to battle stations and returning fire, go to page 35.  If you (Captain Kirk) respond to the attack by going into warp drive and escape, go to page 56.  Hopefully… you get the point.  What direction you chose determined what would happen to you next. Sometimes, it was good and sometimes it was bad… even death.  And if you chose to do nothing – to close up the book, then the adventure could not and would not continue.

These books remind me so much of the bible – the bible being the best “choose your own adventure” book ever written.  Our lives are made up of many “chapters” and in general, we get to choose the direction and outcome of each chapter we live.  The difference though between those books from the 80’s and the bible, is those books are good “made up” stories – the bible is real, truth, and historical.  There’s nothing in the bible that is “made up”.  So, when we get to a life “crossroads”… the end of a “chapter” and the bible says if you do “this… “go to page… and this will happen – or if you choose to do this, then go to page… and this will happen”, we can know that the outcome is real and not made up.

I like to look at the bible as our “human safety manual”.  God has given us the bible to help us make the right choices – to choose the right path when we come to life’s crossroads. “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” Deut. 30:19. In our life’s journey or adventure, we get to choose whether we will live it in such a way that it brings life or death – blessings or curses upon ourselves and our family. The bible was written in love – it is God’s love letter to us– His “human safety manual” to His creation (us).

When we purchase a piece of electronic equipment, an appliance or power tool, it always comes with a safety/user’s manual… right?  The manufacture wants to give us the opportunity to learn all we can about what we’ve purchased so that we can get the most out of it.  The “creator” of this piece of equipment wants us to be able to learn it’s full purpose, value and abilities – what to do and what not to do to get the most out of our investment.   We are like that piece of equipment and God is the manufacturer and He has given us a “safety/user’s manual” so that we have the opportunity to know our full purpose, value and abilities that He has created us for.  It is in knowing these that we can choose life instead of death, blessings instead of curses. You and I are the main characters in our own “choose your own adventure” storybook.  How will yours end up?  It’s your choice.  So, the next time, you or someone around you is tempted to diminish the value and purpose of the Bible, remember that it is our Human Safety Manual, written by a loving, patient God who wants His creation to be all that He created them to be.
